Use your smartphone’s antenna

Just when you thought your smartphone can’t get any more useful.

I guess there is a reason they are called smartphones, and even without any apps of websites, you can use your own smartphone’s antenna as a cell tower locator.

Fo you to understand how it all works, we need to give you a bit of background information.

Any network signal is a wave that is transmitted from the cell tower, and the built-in antennas of our phone catch them.

Those waves are measured in dBm or decibel-milliwatts. The range of the signal is -50 dBm to -120 dBm, the former being the strongest, and latter – pretty much non-existent.

You can see that data on your phone; all you have to do is dig a bit deeper in your settings and know where to look.

There is a false notion that bars on the screen show how strong the signal is.

Those bars are merely a representation of the dBm readings and portrait very approximate information.

If the exact strength of the signal and the Verizon cell tower locations, for example, is important, you can access that data on your phone.

How to access signal readings

Naturally, as operating systems vary, the instructions to getting into the field mode also are different.

As usual, if you know how to find one thing on your iPhone, you can bet, on Android, it will be in a different place.

So here are the steps for both OS users.

Android

The model of your phone and operating system matters here, however, the main guidelines are as follows:

  • Click on Settings
  • About Phone
  • Network or Status
  • SIM Status
  • Under Signal Strength, you will find the dBm readings.
iOS

Here, as always with iPhone, things are not as easy and smooth and vary depending on your phone’s OS version and chipset (Qualcomm or Intel), as well as on your provider.

To be able to find AT&T and T Mobile tower locations, with Intel chipset with iOS 11&12, you need to follow these instructions:

  • Dial  *3001#12345#*
  • Tap on LTE
  • Tap on Serving Cell Means
  • You will see the dBm as rsrp0.

Those of you who need to find Verizon & Sprint tower locations, and have Qualcomm chipset with iOS 11 and 12 versions:

  • Dial *3001#12345#*
  • Tap on 1xEV-DO
  • Your dBm can be read as RX AGC0.

In case your OS is a predecessor of 11, follow the instructions below:

  • Dial *3001#12345#*
  • Go down
  • In the upper left corner of the screen, you will see your dBm.

Use a Signal Meter to Find Your Cell Tower Location

While using a smartphone as an antenna is a fair way to use it as a cell tower locator, there is, of course, a designated device, especially for that purpose.

It’s called a signal meter and is a small, handheld device that shows all 3G and 4G bands and frequencies, signal strength in dBm, and provides correct cell tower located within the radius of 45-90°.

However handy, this is a working tool for professional telecommunications workers, like installers and engineers.

So what do you do when you have finally located that tower?

Then you need to connect to it.

However, everything is not as easy as it seems.

All smartphones are wired to connect to the strongest signal, and usually, it’s the one coming from a tower next to you.

In case you re experiencing trouble with that one, your phone should reroute the signal and get it from the second-best source.

You can choose between towers using the apps mentioned above.
